Supporting Sustainable Intensification of Farming from Space
Farming concerns us all. It shapes our landscapes and brings food to our tables. So while at least in the developed world only a small percentage of the population works in the farming sector, the impact their work has is huge. Add to that that the global population is rising and you’ll understand what challenges the sector faces.
Quick Start for first time user
In case you are visiting the Food Security Thematic Exploitation Platform for the first time, please follow these steps:
Hatfield Consultants, Canada have done great work in explaining their "EO Mangrove Service to support sustainable aquaculture development" in a very beautiful 2-minutes video! The video can be either accessed on our videos homepage or directly on YouTube. Just follow our Food Security TEP playlist, more content will come up regularly!
The Food Security TEP platform and website encountered irregular unavailiblity errors due to failing storage hardware between Friday 19/09/19 and Monday morning 23/09/19. Learn more about Using the Food Security TEP and how Deep Learning Services for Food Security Applications are made available on Food security TEP in this ESA PhiWeek side event: "From Copernicus Big Data to Extreme Earth Analytics: the ExtremeEarth Project"
The event will take place between 9 and 13 September 2019 at ESRIN in Frascati, IT and is focused on Space 4.0 for Earth Observation.
Deadline soon! Register now for the 9th Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing: Agriculture until 30 June 2019
The European Space Agency (ESA) is organising an Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing with the focus on Agriculture. This course is dedicated to training the next generation of Earth Observation (EO) scientists and experts from agriculture and food security related agencies to exploit data from EO missions (e.g. the Copernicus Sentinels) for science and applications development in the domain of agriculture.
The course is part of ESA’s EO Science for Society – Scientific Exploitation element of EOEP-5 (the fifth cycle of ESA’s Earth Observation Envelope Programme).
Aquaculture experts in Food Security TEP team publish “Guidance on spatial technologies for disaster risk management in aquaculture"
FS-TEP team collaborated with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to publish a spatial technologies guide that provides concepts and technical information on relevant technologies available to decision-makers, managers and technical personnel involved in disaster risk management (DRM) for aquaculture.
The Guide addresses the use of spatial technologies that support those working to reduce disaster risks and respond to emergencies in the aquaculture sector. It describes the principles for using spatial technologies in DRM and will therefore remain relevant, even in the context of rapid technological innovation and the advancement of these technologies.
"This summer’s drought is a harsh reminder of how unusual weather can cause havoc for farmers – even in a rich part of the world like Western Europe. While there is a wealth of satellite data available to help predict the risk of drought, it can be daunting for a non-expert to handle. ESA’s Food Security Thematic Exploitation Platform makes this task much easier."
Read more on what the Food Security TEP can do to support managing droughts in this article on the ESA website.
On 5th and 6th of March 2018, the Food Security platform team organized a workshop at the ESRIN facilities of the European Space Agency (ESA) in Frascati, Italy bringing together its diverse agricultural user community. The workshop, titled “EO for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture”, brought together stakeholders from the public sector including science and education, from the farming and insurance industry as well as from organizations providing EO services.
