9th ESA Training Course: Agriculture material available online

The 9th ESA Advanced Training Course on Land Remote Sensing with the focus on Agriculture has been hosted by Université catholique of Louvain during the week of 16-20/09/2019 (see program). This course was dedicated to training the next generation of Earth Observation scientists and experts from agriculture and food security related agencies to exploit data from EO missions (e.g. the Copernicus Sentinels) for science and applications development in the domain of agriculture. With 94 participants (73 students and scientists as well as 21 experts from national and international agencies) coming from 35 different countries, this course has been a big success. In addition to ESA staff, 8 European professors and international experts introduced concepts and shared practical applications.

Tackling drought issues for food security

"This summer’s drought is a harsh reminder of how unusual weather can cause havoc for farmers – even in a rich part of the world like Western Europe. While there is a wealth of satellite data available to help predict the risk of drought, it can be daunting for a non-expert to handle. ESA’s Food Security Thematic Exploitation Platform makes this task much easier."
