The Food Security TEP provides access to tools for computing basic key indices (vegetation and water content indices from Sentinel-2 data, as well as chlorophyll, soil and red edge indices) on the fly, and for visualising and manipulating them. To allow for an easy way of calculating other indices with standard EO software (SNAP), two processing services allow the configuration of the Sentinel-2 input bands (see below). Furthermore, new processing services can be easily configured using Docker templates provided in the Developer section of the platform. The Food Security Platform provides the following key index processing services based on ESA's SNAP toolbox:


Normalized Water Difference
The NDWI correlates with the water content of vegetation and is complementary to the NDVI.
Brightness Index
The brightness index is linked with soil humidity and the presence of salts in the soil.
Mean Clorophyll Absorption
MCARI is responsive to leaf chlorophyll concentration and ground reflectance. Generally, high MCARI values indicate low leaf chlorophyll content.
Red Edge Position
S2REP is sensitive to both (crop) chlorophyll content and growth status. Generally, the higher the S2REP value, the higher the chlorophyll content.
Band Ratio
This service provides users the ability to configure Sentinel-2 bands for the processing of (Band_A) / (Band_B).
Normalized Band Difference
This service provides users the ability to configure Sentinel-2 bands for the processing of (Band_A - Band_B)/ (Band_A + Band_B).
